Temporomandibular Joint Disorders
Temporomandibular joint disorder, also called TMJ or TMD, is a condition in which the joints that hinge the muscles and jawbone are not working properly. A significant percentage of Americans experience pain linked to TMJ/TMD.
Symptoms can include:
- Tooth pain / sensitivity
- Excessive tooth wear
- Jaw muscle tension
- Clicking or popping in the jaw joint
- Earaches or ringing in the ears
- Neck or shoulder pain
- Radiant pain in the extremities
- Inability to open or close the mouth
- Bruxism, or grinding and clinching the teeth
- Migraines or tension headaches
TMJ dysfunction can be caused by a variety of conditions, so we will comprehensively evaluate your bite and joint to find the root of the problem. TMJ disorders can be treated through bite therapy (including oral appliances), lifestyle adjustments, or in extreme cases, surgery.
